CAMBRIDGE, ON (OCTOBER 4, 2016) – Today, Cowan Insurance Group, along with The Cowan Foundation, announced that more than $107,000 was raised at the 2016 Cowan Charity Classic golf tournaments in support of youth mental health initiatives at Lutherwood in Waterloo Region and Youth Services Bureau (YSB) in Ottawa.

Annually, Cowan Insurance Group hosts the Cowan Charity Classic golf tournaments in both the Waterloo and Ottawa Regions in support of Canadian non-profit organizations. This year marked the 15th annual event in Waterloo Region, held at Deer Ridge Golf Club, and the 5th annual event in Ottawa, held at Eagle Creek Golf Club. Each year, different Canadian non-profit organizations are selected to receive the funds raised at the tournaments, which are also matched by The Cowan Foundation.

Lutherwood and Youth Services Bureau are the lead agencies for children’s mental health in their respective communities and are responsible for ensuring that a range of services is available for children and families struggling with mental health challenges. Services include prevention, counseling, education, as well as treatment in families’ homes, the community, and treatment centres. The proceeds from the tournament will support ongoing services in both communities.

  • "Mental health services and programs are vitally important to the success of our communities,” says Heather McLachlin, President of Cowan Insurance Group. “Lutherwood and Youth Services Bureau are doing great things to support and educate at-risk youth and their families struggling with mental health challenges. We are proud to contribute to the continued services and programs offered by these organizations to help affected youth and their families overcome obstacles related to mental health.”
  • “Lutherwood and Youth Services Bureau are leading organizations that are helping deliver a continuum of children and youth services in Cowan communities,” says Terry Reidel, Executive Director of The Cowan Foundation. “We are pleased to match funds raised in the Cowan Charity Classic to support the underlying framework that assists in our communities and helps manage these issues province-wide.”
  • “The Cowan Charity Classic is a top-notch event! Lutherwood was honoured to be part of the wonderful community that Cowan Insurance Group gathered for the tournament,” says Donna Buchan, Executive Director of the Lutherwood Child and Family Foundation. “These funds will support programs and initiatives for children who struggle with serious mental health challenges to help them find solutions and develop strategies to cope.”
  • “At YSB, our integrated services support youth and their families with significant mental health challenges—often at a critical time, when they are most vulnerable,” said Patti Murphy, Executive Director of Youth Services Bureau’s Charitable Foundation. “We thank everyone involved in this year’s tournament for supporting these services for youth.”
